O U R S T O R Y
I’m Paul, and I’m Maddie.
Our life together has been a rollercoaster of life-changing events and decisions that feel mostly chaotic and uncontrollable. I’m sure you can relate.
We met in 2013 at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio. We were on the same RA staff and seemed to make an impression on each other right off the bat. Paul was pursuing English and Education and I frequently saw him out on the lawn writing stories. And that poor, sweet guy went running with me in the wee hours of the morning and on those runs we talked about our life goals, what we really cared about, and the experiences in our lives up to that point that shaped us. I admired his desire to be a mentor to future students and I loved the excitement he exuded when he talked about whatever he story or article he was writing. We connected quickly and easily and have since been fortunate enough to make large mental shifts simultaneously.
Maddie mentioned I was writing a lot when we first met. That’s true. At the time, I was working on a short story titled “The Encumbered Cucumber,” about a poor cucumber stuck between what life he wants to live vs. the one he currently leads. It was an allegory, and I was the encumbered cucumber. From the moment I met Maddie I couldn’t help but to be drawn to her energy and passion for life and others. So much so that I cut things off with my then-girlfriend and even went running with her--which I absolutely hate doing. But it was on those early morning jogs (or frequent sections of walking...those walking stretches were because of me), that we shared our hopes and dreams and who we wanted to be in this world. I was so drawn to Maddie’s love for her family and friends and her desire to use art to better people’s lives. We started living together almost immediately--which, when looking back, is absolutely insane (this was also the sin in our lives that Jesus drew out, ultimately leading us to Him (John 4)--but more on that later).
On Christmas Eve 2015, I asked Maddie to marry me. I obviously said yes, and we planned our wedding for September 2nd, 2017.
In 2016, we had our world rocked by Jesus in the best possible way--Jesus is awesome. We made some major life changes which you can read all about here (link) and we’re on a journey full of constant surprises, major curveballs, hard decisions, lots of questioning, but ultimately an insane amount of grace.
We want to share our passions, our current projects, and our thoughts with you. We want to share the most basic day-to-day activities alongside the big, life-altering things we feel God is calling us towards.
We want to share the ups, the downs, and the in-betweens of our life with you. If you’re anything like us, you’re still figuring ‘it’ out. Whatever that means. We hope sharing our journey supports and encourages you in yours.
