Week 3 | Spring 2021 ORC | Wall Treatment

Hey friends! The third week of One Room Challenge is complete and this week was a big one for us! If you need to catch up, here’s week one and week two!

I started working on the wall treatment in the boys room which is something I’ve been really excited about since back in November. Do you guys ever come up with an idea and your Husband thinks you’re absolutely crazy when you tell it to him? That’s definitely what Paul thought when I told him I wanted to save the decent pieces of floor that we were ripping up in our living room and dining room.

When we first bought the house, we thought we would be able to just refinish the floors on the first floor. Of course, renovations don’t usually go as planned. Once we started really checking things out, we realized the floors were only about 3/8-1/4 of am inch thick and way too thin to be refinished — there was maybe 1/8′ about the tongue and that was only on the good pieces. So, we ordered some wide plank white pine floors, and pulled up the old stuff.

As we were about halfway through the living room I realized I could totally use it as a wall treatment, especially if it was something we just wanted to paint! While removing all of the nails, finding a place in our basement to store it, and then digging it back out wasn’t vey fun, it was totally worth it!! The cost of shiplap to do a similar wall treatment for the boys room would have cost us somewhere between 300 and 400 dollars! Once Paul saw it all up he said “I hate to say it, but it does look really awesome.” I really appreciate his willingness to just trust me in my vision even when he thinks I’m nuts, haha!

I was able to get all of the flooring pieces up on the walls over the weekend and it’s so exciting seeing my vision come to life! Even though it does look pretty cool as is, the plan has always been to paint it. It’s in pretty rough shape (hence why it needed replaced) so I’m going to try using the liquid sander deglosser to prep the wood for painting. I’ve never used it, so we’ll see how it goes! Then I’ll probably patch a few of the rough spots and nail holes, sand it down lightly and be ready to paint!

My goal for this next week is to get the rest of the trim up, prep for paint, and hopefully pick a paint color! The duvet sets came in from Target so I’m going to head to the store to try to find a color that coordinates well. I’m sure I’ll try to get the boys to the house with me next week for their afternoon nap so I can start painting because I can’t wait to see how it ends up looking! Fingers crossed. These are the kind of projects that I’m the most excited about because I feel like they really take this from being a house to really feeling like home.

Again, thanks so much for joining along on this journey. It means so much having people cheering us on and supporting us! You can follow along on more of the behind the scenes kind of stuff on our instagram (linked below)! Also, be sure to check out all of the other participants here. There are so many inspiring projects happening!
